Cambodia attracted US$39 billion in FDI in the first half of the year

Compass Cambodia report - Cambodia attracted US$39 billion in foreign direct investment in the first half of this year, an increase of about 10% over the same period last year.

According to data released by the National Bank of Cambodia, from January to June this year, foreign direct investment inflows into Cambodia reached US$39 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.

This has also reversed the downward trend of foreign direct investment flowing into Cambodia due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. Last year, Cambodia attracted 32 billion U.S. dollars of foreign direct investment, a decrease of 12.5% from the previous year.

According to statistics from the National bank in Cambodia, China is still Cambodia’s largest source of foreign investment. In the first half of this year, Chinese foreign investment inflows into Cambodia reached US$17.3 billion, accounting for 44.2% of the total.

This is followed by South Korea (US$4.1 billion), Vietnam (US$2.5 billion), Singapore (US$2.4 billion), Japan (US$2.3 billion), Malaysia (US$1.8 billion), Thailand (US$1.8 billion), and the United Kingdom (US$1.3 billion), Canada (US$1 billion) and the United States (US$800 million).

Foreign capital is mainly invested in the financial sector (21.9%), manufacturing (20.8%), real estate (12.2%), hotels and restaurants (11%), agriculture (10.7%), energy (6.3%), construction (3.7%), and others (13.4%).

Please note that Cambodia’s new Investment Law came into effect on October 15 and is expected to attract more foreign direct investment to Cambodia.
