Mondulkiri Airport Project by a Chinese Company Have Been Hindered

Compass Cambodia report - Due to COVID-19, a Chinese company's research of the Mondulkiri Airport project is behind schedule.

HE Sin Chansereyvutha, a spokesman for the State Secretary of Civil Aviation (SSCA), claimed on Thursday 14 October that a team of Chinese firms was unable to visit and inspect the site due to COVID-19-related regulations.

"The research has been hindered. Experts have been unable to travel in and out of the country, which has hampered the company's research," he explained.

Since December of last year, Power China International Group Ltd has had the authority in principle to examine the airport project in Mondulkiri from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The company's team has already evaluated the airport's location multiple times, and the study should be completed within two years, he added.

The airport, which will be built in Sen Monorom commune in Oreang district, will cover 300 to 600 hectares and cost about US$60 to US$80 million.

In addition, the Cambodian government and the Chinese company are now working on a framework agreement for this airport project. The framework agreement focuses on the project's requirements from both the enterprise and the government.

Following the framework agreement, the firm will examine the preliminary study results from earlier this year in further depth.
