Compass Cambodia report, August 2 - Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) has been delaying Cambodia's first wind power investment project in the Bokor tariff negotiation process since mid-2020, while the government seeks lower costs.
The wind power study project has been finished, according to Victor Jona, Director General of Energy for the Ministry of Mines and Energy, but building has yet to commence because the firm has not struck an agreement with EDC.
"Electricity rate negotiations have so far failed because the government's aim is to cut electricity prices for all categories of consumers. As a result, EDC must seek out low-cost energy sources," he explained. He also indicated that EDC has not pushed the negotiations because of the falling energy demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. They claimed to offer the greatest value in the market at US$6.88 per kilowatt-hour, according to investment firm The Blue Circle.
Bokor Mountain was chosen as the site for this 80 MW wind power project based on the first proposal.
